2012 Cabernet Franc

Here is a rare example of a wine that includes non-Naramata fruit (28% from Black Sage Road). The wine has the classic brambly aromas of the variety, leading to flavours of raspberry and cherry. Twelve months of barrel-aging (18% new) polished the long ripe tannins

It’s been six years since I lasted this wine and obviously much has happened at Hillside. Cabernet Franc is finding its feet in the Okanagan especially those heading in the floral, cranberry, spicy tea leaf direction. This is an elegant, juicy, mid-weight red with cherries and tea tannins and a touch of resin in the flavours. A stylish food wine for drinkers who are thinkers. Aged for three to five years or serve it now with grilled meats, domestic and wild, or rich mushroom dishes. The wine spends 13 months in new and used American oak barrels before the final blend.


2015 Gewürztraminer

This is a dry and spicy wine with good intensity on the palate. There are aromas and flavours of lychee and grapefruit, with an herbal note on the finish.


2015 Muscat Ottonel

Muscat Ottonel was the first grape variety planted at the original Hillside farmgate winery and now boasts over 30 years of time in the ground. There is not a lot of this wine but it’s sensational, especially since winemaker Kathy Malone intervened in the vineyard to give these old vines some extra care before stepping back in the winery to let the grapes express what they had by themselves. All floral and spice, this is classic muscat ottonel that would shock a lot or Europeans with its authenticity. The grapes are hand harvested at the modest 21.5 Brix, handled gently with some skin contact before a long slow ferment-just what the doctor ordered. It ends with a touch of residual sugar, for an off-dry finish. Look for a floral, spicy, orange, ginger aromas that preview a delicate, sophisticated, elegantly-styled muscat awash in green apple, minty, rosewater flavours. The finish tastes like more. Try this with a light fish dish or a favourite sushi role Bravo.

John Schreiner - This delicately floral and spicy wine is arguably Hillside’s signature white. The fruit aromas and flavours range from tropical to peach. An almost imperceptible few grams of residual sugar lift the aromas and flesh out the texture.


2014 Syrah

91 Points - John Schreiner

From a slightly warmer vintage, this wine has even more power than the previous one. The aromas include black pepper, plum and vanilla, leading to flavours reminiscent of deli meats.


2013 Merlot Malbec

91 Points -

Beppi Crosariol - Full-bodied and juicy, this smart red blend from veteran winemaker Kathy Malone takes smooth merlot to a livelier level, with peppery spice and background notes of tobacco and freshly roasted coffee bean.

88 Points -

Anthony Gismondi - Similar to last year with a little less charm. Savoury resin, black cherry, black pepper aromas flecked with cedar. Dry, lean, smoky, savoury entry with tobacco, sour cherry, cedar, tea and coffee flavours. A light mini Bordeaux style that finished dry and lean at this point. Serve not with grilled lamb chops or give some time in bottle to settle in.
