2016 Muscat Ottonel

2016 Muscat Ottonel
Double Gold Medal

Muscat Ottonel was the first variety planted at the Hillside farm (1984), and has been a favorite here for some 30 years. Moderate summer temperatures and a long season produced grapes of true varietal expression. This wine has lovely floral aromas and hints of spice.

Winemaker Notes
An early, warm spring led into a cool summer in 2017, perfect conditions for aromatic white varieties such as the Muscat family. The grapes were hand harvested in mid-September over three days at 21.2° and 21.8° Brix. Handled gently to preserve its delicate aromatics, the fruit was de-stemmed and given overnight skin contact before draining/pressing off skins and cold settling. The juice was allowed a long slow fermentation in stainless steel. Fermentation ended with a small amount of residual sugar remaining, for an off-dry finish.
Food Pairing Notes
Pairs beautifully with Thai food, picnics and fresh air

Since planting Muscat Ottonel in 1984 at the Hillside Farm, this varietal has grown in popularity at Hillside Winery to the point where they've created a cult-like following for it as patrons drop in to their Naramata winery in the summer to enjoy a delicious meal at The Bistro and make sure they leave with several bottles to enjoy in the summer sun. The 2016 shows a beautiful bouquet of sweet floral blossoms, stone fruit, and spice. The palate offers sweet citrus & stone fruits, and spice, all with a zippy yet slightly off dry finish making it ideal on its own or when paired with Asian cuisine. Next time you're in the Okanagan make sure you visit this lovely winery and enjoy a meal at The Bistro, then visit some of the other many award winning neighbouring wineries along the Naramata Bench - you'll be happy you did! Tasted January 2018. 90 points. Matt Steeves - www.quercusvino.ca
